FAQs

  • How do I use Gourmet Garden?

Use Gourmet Garden herbs and spices the same way you would use fresh herbs and spices, as much or as little to taste.

When following a recipe, replace the fresh herb or spice in a 1:1 ratio. If the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of chopped basil, use 1 teaspoon of Gourmet Garden basil.

For dried herbs, use in a 3:1 ratio, for example, use 3 teaspoons of Gourmet Garden Ginger if a recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of ground ginger.

Generally spices are added at the beginning of the cooking process and herbs towards the end and we encourage you to add according to your own taste.

  • How much Gourmet Garden should I use?

Just squeeze! Flavors are a very individual choice so go ahead and squeeze a little, taste recipe and then add more. Just like fresh herbs, add according to your own taste.

  • What are the best applications for each variety?

Have a look at our Recipe section for a collection of delicious, quick & easy weekday recipes or our product pages for tips on how to use each Gourmet Garden herb or spice. Or where recipes call for fresh herbs or spices, simply substitute with Gourmet Garden and add according to your own taste.

  • Can Gourmet Garden varieties be mixed together?

Gourmet Garden herbs and spices work exceptionally well together and allow you to create some of the classic flavors of the world: Basil and Garlic (Italian), Chili Pepper, Lemongrass, Ginger and Cilantro (Thai), Garlic and Chili pepper (Portuguese / Mexican).

Or take the hassle out of creating your own blend and use Gourmet Garden Fresh Blends. Simply squeeze in to create authentic Mexican, Steak, Mediterranean, Moroccan and Thai meals at home in minutes.

  • Is Gourmet Garden a substitute for dried or fresh herbs?

Absolutely. Gourmet Garden can be substituted in any recipe where fresh or dried herb or spice is called for in a recipe. Substitute using a 1:1 ratio for fresh herbs and spices. Substitute using a 3:1 ratio for dried herbs and spices (more Gourmet Garden paste).

  • Should I reduce the salt added to a recipe?

Gourmet Garden flavors your cooking with the fresh taste of herbs and spices therefore there is no need to add salt to your meal.

  • How does Gourmet Garden stay fresh tasting?

A secret recipe using a balance of ingredients has been created to maintain the natural flavor and texture of the selected herb or spice. The herbs and spices are harvested at a time that maximizes their flavors. This crop is then washed, chopped and blended for you to discover the fresh chopped taste when you open the tube in your home.

  • Does the flavor "go bad" over time?

Not if the storage and usage instructions are followed. If the product is exposed to excessive warmth and light then natural oxidation will take place and the fresh herb taste of the product will deteriorate. This is the same as for all fresh and refridgerated products. Keep Gourmet Garden in your fridge to maintain its flavor and color.

  • What temperature should Gourmet Garden be refrigerated at?

4 degrees C / 40 degrees F or less, is suitable for storing Gourmet Garden, so normal household refrigerators are perfect.

  • Once open how long can I keep Gourmet Garden in the fridge?

Gourmet Garden products must be kept refrigerated and last for up to 90 days or until the end of the best before date. The best before date is located on the cap.

  • Are Gourmet Garden tubes recyclable?

Gourmet Garden herbs and spices packed in tubes are category 7 plastics and are now recyclable in most cities. Please check your local ordinances or recycling center for more information. We will be adding the information to our packaging as soon as we are able.

  • Once opened does this affect the best before date?

No, as long as the cap is replaced back onto the tube and the tube is stored in the fridge, the best before date will be as stated on the cap.

  • How long can I keep Gourmet Garden out of the fridge?

We recommend that Gourmet Garden be returned as soon as practicable to refrigerated temperatures. Leaving the product out of the fridge for longer than half an hour is not advisable, as with any other chilled product.

  • If I've left Gourmet Garden open in the kitchen, does it go bad?

As refrigeration is essential to preserving the fresh chopped taste of Gourmet Garden, we do not recommend that it is left open in the kitchen. The warmth and atmosphere in a kitchen promotes oxidation of the product and the flavors of the herbs and spices will deteriorate, as with fresh herbs. We recommend that Gourmet Garden be returned as soon as practicable to refrigerated temperatures. Leaving the product out of the fridge for longer than half an hour is not advisable, as with any other refrigerated product.

  • Can I use Gourmet Garden straight from the freezer?

Many of our products can be used directly from the freezer. You may notice a change in the ease with which they squeeze, however if this occurs leave the tube on your kitchen counter for a few minutes and then squeeze into your cooking.

  • Can I put Gourmet Garden back in the freezer once open?

Yes, you may return the tube to the freezer between every use until finished. The Best Before Date is on the cap and it can be extended for another 3 months if stored and used directly from the freezer.

  • What are the other ingredients in Gourmet Garden?

There are no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives in our herbs and spices. There are a few simple food ingredients included in the product, though their role is about creating an environment where harmful bacteria cannot grow. These ingredients are kept to a minimum and it’s about having a product which is fresh and safe for people to consume and still deliver the fresh taste of herbs and spices to you in a convenient, long lasting pack.
